FTP Setup

for customers using the Plesk control panel

  1. What is FTP?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and it is the process used to upload and download files from a web server. This is done using an FTP program.

  2. Do you recommend any FTP programs?

Here are a few FTP programs that we recommend:

    Windows

    BulletProof FTP

    Ipswitch's WS_FTP Pro

    Junod's WS_FTP LE

    GlobalSCAPE's CuteFTP

    Macintosh

    Transmit

    Fetch

    Interarchy

  3. What information do I need to enter into my FTP program or the FTP feature that is built into my web design application in order to upload my files to the server?

    server/hostname: www.your-domain.com
    username: your-username
    password: your-password
    remote directory: httpdocs
    port: 21

  4. Ok, I uploaded my files, but nothing is showing up when I try to access my site using a browser?

    1. Double check that you have uploaded your files to the httpdocs folder

    2. Check that you have named your default page: index.html, index.htm, home.html or home.htm

  5. My FTP program is some having problems connecting, how can I troubleshoot this?

    1. Make sure that you have entered all the proper FTP information for your site. This was provided in the account information email that we sent you when your site become live on our server.

    2. Do not add a "ftp." before your domain name.

    3. Double check that your FTP program is set to access port number 21.

    4. Verify that you currently have a connection to the internet and that your ISP is not having any problems.

    5. If you are behind a firewall, make sure that it is not configured to block access to port 21 on outbound connections. Also, you could try enabling "passive mode" on your FTP program since some firewalls require this when using FTP.

  6. When I upload my files to the server, why are they corrupted?

Make sure that your FTP application is set to automatically detect ACSII or binary mode.

  7. How do I change the password for FTP access?

    1. Log in to your control panel.
    2. Select the domain name that you want to apply the change to.
    3. Click on HOSTING.
    4. Next to the "FTP Password" box, enter the new password
    5. Next to the "Confirm FTP Password" box, enter the new password again.
    6. Click on UPDATE.

  8. Do you offer anonymous FTP?

For security reasons, we do not support anonymous FTP.
